Microsoft has an immediate opening for a Senior Attorney on the global Workplace Investigations Team (WIT) within Microsoft’s Compliance and Ethics team. The mission of the Compliance and Ethics team is to champion Microsoft’s strategic interests, to serve as trusted advisors, and to empower employees to uphold the highest standards of integrity, enhancing the trust between the Company, its employees and the public. 

This role will contribute to the mission by ensuring that our employees work in a culture that is inclusive and fair. They will be instrumental in protecting and enhancing our ethos and closing the gap between the culture we aspire to and the day-to-day realities that some might experience by enhancing our efficiencies around the communication and treatment of these realities.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this role include:

  • Manage a diverse team and help the WIT lead build out a world class, diverse, and global organization of attorney investigators and business professionals.
  • Enact efficiencies and best practices for investigations team to improve investigation consistency and effectiveness and to respond proactively to the tracking, trending, and analysis of employee relations issues.
  • Anticipate highly complex or unprecedented issues/trends facing Microsoft and the broader technology industry across the globe and lead the development of associated strategies and solutions. 
  • Implement and provide front-line legal guidance and policy principles in a thorough and empathetic way across Microsoft while focusing on cross-border employee relations issues to achieve compliance with employment and investigative laws and to achieve Microsoft’s commitment to enhance a culture of inclusivity and fairness.
  • Make determinations regarding workplace behavior including company policies related to equal employment opportunity, anti-harassment and anti-discrimination, and family and romantic relationship conflicts of interest.
  • Exercise considerable judgment and discretion in scenarios that are complex and highly sensitive while bringing in a high degree of EQ and a human dimension through the investigations.
  • Partner with other internal investigative teams and multiple internal stakeholders such as the local and global HR teams and Compliance teams.
  • Manage resources within budget and direct external counsel

 

 

Qualifications

 

Desired qualifications:

  • Excellent academic credentials, a J.D. or equivalent from an ABA accredited law school or equivalent non-U.S. law degree, and an active license to practice law. 
  • 10+ years as a practicing attorney, preferably with significant in-house and global experience. 
  • Legal work experience and expertise in the areas of employment law and/or workplace investigations. 

Desired skills and attributes:

  • Prior experience at a large international organization working on employment/investigation issues.
  • Significant experience conducting and consulting on cross-border and complex workplace investigations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of human resources practices and regionally applicable local employment laws
  • Commitment to diversity and respect for others
  • Experience developing and delivering training on investigation issues
  • The ability to collaborate, negotiate, and generate consensus among those with diverse points of view
  • Sound judgment that incorporates strong legal analysis, a pragmatic approach, and consideration of business goals, risk tolerance, and stakeholder priorities
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and a bias for action in a fast-paced, matrixed environment
  • Ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines in the face of competing priorities
  • A desire to grow and take on new challenges as they arise
