Barr: acting head of Bureau of Prisons removed following Epstein death

US Attorney General William Barr announced Monday that the acting head of the Bureau of Prisons has been removed following the death of Jeffrey Epstein.

Barr said that he will be appointing Dr. Kathleen Hawk Sawyer as the new Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Barr previously appointed Hawk Sawyer to the same role when he served as attorney general in 1992. During her previous tenure she introduced the Forward Thinking Initiative, which was designed to work proactively instead of reactively to possible changes in the conditions of the prison system.

The statement addressed a variety of concerns about the operations of federal prisons, ranging from the safety of inmates to the effects of prison manufacturing businesses on the country as a whole.
