Description:

The Senior Counsel will support the Litigation section of a large corporate legal department in a publicly traded, international energy company. 

Responsibilities may include:

  • Managing toxic tort and/or personal injury litigation in coordination with outside counsel
  • Investigating and analyzing incidents, claims, or potential disputes (including bankruptcy, contract, real estate, collections, auto) in coordination with ConocoPhillips business units
  • Providing options and recommended course of action to ConocoPhillips business unit representatives and Legal department management in connection with claims and litigation
  • Working directly with claimants and/or their legal representatives in the resolution of claims or disputes
  • Evaluating liability and projecting financial impact
  • Analyzing contractual indemnity obligations
  • Participating on emergency response team regarding claims in connection with company incidents

Basic/Required:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Juris Doctor from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association or foreign equivalent
  • 7+ years experience as an attorney
  • Proficient (perform the skill with limited assistance) with MS Office Suite
  • Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to travel up to 10% of the time

Preferred:

  • Experience in various areas of litigation, including personal injury, asbestos, benzene, property damage, commercial, real estate
  • Experience in bankruptcy
  • Experience in oil and gas
  • Experience in resolution of pre-litigation disputes, including tort and commercial issues, with strong negotiation skills
  • Experience in insurance or claims management
  • Ability to manage and prioritize assignments which may be varied in scope and involve collaborative work with employees in different departments or with varying levels of seniority
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Ability to anticipate and address the needs of the business units
  • Self-initiative and proactive handling of assignments
  • Mature judgment and discretion
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Comprehensive analytical, conceptual, problem-solving, planning, and evaluation skills
  • Builds strong relationships based on trust and seeks collaboration across organizational boundaries to achieve goals
  • Listens actively and invites dialogue for shared understanding, then influences and acts to drive performance and achieve results
  • Delivers results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
