Job Description

The Corporate Counsel provides legal counsel to the retail, manufacturing, and distribution divisions of Menards.  They advise management-side personnel on workers’ compensation and premises liability claims; provide legal counsel on contract drafting, review, and negotiation with external vendors and business partners; assist with the management of the company’s intellectual property portfolio; and provide legal advice regarding business matters.  

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support workers’ compensation and premises liability claims management.  Lead external and internal resources in support of the defense of workers’ compensation matters and premises liability actions in tort
  • Responsible for budgeting and forecasting litigation exposure and defense costs; identifying, retaining, and terminating outside counsel as needed; and coordinating the defense of claims with third-party  administrators and insurers
  • Responsible for contract drafting, review, and negotiation
  • Provide legal support and assist management-side personnel with regulatory compliance strategies
  • Provide legal support and assist in the management of the company’s intellectual property portfolio  
  • Identify opportunities and implement internal company policies and procedures to increase business efficiencies
  • Provide legal support and assist management-side personnel with various legal matters as assigned

Skills & Requirements

  • Active state license to practice law in at least ONE state where Menards conducts business operations
  • Relocation to Eau Claire, Wisconsin is REQUIRED
  • Provide legal counsel to internal corporate client in a timely manner and efficient manner
  • Ability to advise on a broad range of legal matters affecting business operations
  • Ability to apply legal knowledge in a business setting and provide business solutions to legal problems
  • Ability to work and be successful in a team-centered work environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Excellent communication and legal research skills
  • Must work within designated normal office hours - Monday-Friday, 40 hours/week - at the Corporate Office in Eau Claire, WI
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States, presently and in the future, without sponsorship
