Conditions of Employment

NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted position that requires military membership in a compatible military assignment in the Iowa Army National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of this excepted position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.

Military Rank Requirements: Enlisted (E9 and below)
Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET Security clearance


In describing your experience, please be clear and specific. We will not make assumptions regarding your experience. Applicants who do not fully address the minimum/specialized experience needed for the position in their resume will not be referred for consideration.

Experience, education, or training that involved working with office automation systems, software practices and procedures. Experience in working with various legal assistant support functions.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: GS-0986- 07: Must have at least 12 months experience in the following:

  1. Experience, education or training locating and compiling information from files.
  2. Experience processing legal documents by checking them for required information and accuracy, determining if any action is necessary, and annotate case files and status records to reflect receipt and due date for required action.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: GS-0986- 08: Must have at least 18 months experience in the following:

  1. Experience, education or training attending and keeping record of all legal proceedings.
  2. Experience maintaining a court calendar.
  3. Experience establishing, maintaining, and closing case files or systems of legal records.
  4. Experience annotating indices and status records, compiling workload and status reports


Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience - Completion of 2 academic years of education in an accredited college or university will satisfy the requirements for GS-4 positions. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience for GS-5 positions.
