Dicerna has an immediate opening for a patent attorney or agent to join its growing IP team. The selected individual will play a vital role both managing US-based IP portfolio, working with the global IP team, and executing the legal team’s critical IP activities while bringing high energy and a collaborative mindset.
The position will report to the Chief Patent Counsel, Assistant General Counsel and should work well independently and as well as part of a team. The company is in an exciting time of growth and this role has the potential to assist in many capacities, as we continue to expand and grow.
Work collaboratively with our inventors to identify, harvest and prepare invention disclosures;
Partner with our R&D team members to provide counsel and educate along IP matters and reviewing publications for possible IP concerns;
Graduate degree (MS, PhD) in chemistry, cell biology or genetics, a PhD would be a plus.
Registered US Patent Attorney/Agent in good standing with the USPTO.
Develop claiming strategies and integrate technical details about inventions into disclosures;
Draft and prosecute patent applications as necessary, prepare responses to US office actions and assure parallel prosecution cross all foreign counterparts;
Work closely with the IP team to execute Dicerna’s IP filing and prosecution strategy on a global level;
Provide transactional support including but not limited to alliance/collaboration agreements, vendor agreements, clinical trial agreements, confidentiality agreements, consulting agreements; conduct due diligence and,
Assist with IP litigation matters as necessary.
If an Attorney, membership in at least one state bar. Massachusetts preferred.
4-6 years minimum of patent law experience gained in-house and/or in a law firm, preferably a mix. The focus or prior experience being in handling complex chemistry and biology IP matters in the pharmaceutical industry. Previous experience in IP matters related to oligonucleotide molecules preferred but not required.
Experience harvesting invention disclosures, conducting patentability, validity and freedom to operate searches, drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications in the USA and EPO.
Excellent oral and written communication skills as necessary to communicate on issues that are complex and/or sensitive in nature with all levels of management;
Interact with clients (including Research & Development, Alliance Management, Business Development and Commercial) on a daily basis to provide client counselling and proactively solicit invention disclosures.
Demonstrated experience working independently to identify, analyze, and solve problems.
Prioritizes conflicting needs; handles matters confidentially, expeditiously, proactively and follows through on tasks until successful completion.
Review proposed research papers and other publications for any impact on existing patent estate; and,
An interest in joining a diverse and dynamic team, working on sophisticated and emergent technology.
Experience in handling US Inter Partes Reexaminations and EP Oppositions would be a plus;
Familiarity with patent management database systems (e.g., CPi, CPA) preferred; and,
Prior experience with IP due diligence, transactional work and litigation preferred.
