The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Maine has a position available for an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in our Criminal Division. The District of Maine encompasses the entire State of Maine, which has a population of about 1.3 million. Our headquarters office is located in the city of Portland, Maine’s largest city. Our branch office is located two hours north in the city of Bangor. The office prosecutes federal crimes and represents the interests of the United States in civil cases.
The Office has one opening for an experienced criminal prosecutor to enter as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division in our Portland, Maine office. This attorney will prosecute a variety of federal criminal cases with an emphasis on drug cases. Specific case assignments will vary depending on the particular needs of the office. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as training and experience progress. All initial attorney positions to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis. The initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
Applicants must possess a J.D. degree
An active member in good standing of the bar (any jurisdiction).
Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years of post-J.D. experience and demonstrated excellence in trial advocacy.
The successful applicant must relocate within the District and reside within a reasonable distance of the selected office. United States citizenship is required.

At least 3 years of federal or state prosecutorial experience, preferably working within a county or state prosecutor’s office, a U.S. Attorney’s Office and/or a Department of Justice ligating component;
Incisive analytical ability and the facility to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a wide variety of criminal cases;
Superior oral and written communication skills, and strong organizational skills;
Strong advocacy skills and courtroom presence;
Demonstrated analytical ability, good judgment, and excellent communication and courtroom skills;
Excellent computer literacy skills; and
Ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff and client agencies.
