HOW TO FIX CANNOT ACCESS PRIVATE KEY OR USER PROFILE

The SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is an essential technique for security, which establishes one encrypted link (to avoid the third party) between the client and server. If you forget your credentials to pass through, then you may have to manipulate the SSL, which is not an easy task. You have to be careful because any error here can generate numerous additional errors.

One of the many issues generates when users try to import the Private Key of SSL’s (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate file in your local PC’s Certificate Store. There are many user reports which stated that they got the error message stating about it and either profile and the private key is not accessible due to absence of Cryptographic Service Provider in the PC.

Here, you will get the information regarding the modification of the registry. So before doing that, make sure you have made the proper backup of that directory. There are some tricks that can resolve the issue; those are listed one-by-one here.

Importing the Private Key of SSL:

As per Microsoft, error generates due to the main three reasons, which are:

  • Insufficient permission and access to the folders mentioned below –
    DriveLetter:Documents
    SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftCryptoRSAMachineKeys

The presence of third-party sub-key, which prevents the IIS from getting the accesses of Cryptographic Server Provider.

  • Using the remote access to log in to the computer where the user profile is not locally stored.

There are some techniques to resolve this, as mentioned below.

Make changes in MechineKeys Permissions

  • Tap-right on the folder MachineKeys.
  • Go to Security Tab.
  • Tap on the Advanced button.
  • Now, tap on the View/Edit.

Choose the Reset Permission On All Child Objects And Enable Propagation of Inheritable Permission which marks the checkbox.

Remove SubKey of Registry of Third Party.

  • Launch Run (by start button and search bar or press Windows key + R).
  • Enter the command regedit.exe, and press the OK button or hit enter.
  • The registry window will open.
  • You have to go to HKEY_USERSDefaultSoftwareMicrosoftCryptographyProviders.
  • Here you have to enter the value as 001.

There are chances that the error will be removed and not try to get the information. If the removal of subkey doesn’t work, then you have to use this procedure.

Storing User Profile as Local in the Session of Terminal Services

If you are using the Terminal Services and you don’t have the user credentials on your system, then take help of an IT administrator to transfer your login credentials for your local PC. You can also use the roaming profiles for these purposes.

Use these steps to get access to the Private keys and User Profile, and remove the error without generating any threat to the security.
