The Cummins Legal function provides a full range of legal services in support of Cummins Inc. and its consolidated businesses. Our United States staff is located in Columbus and Indianapolis, IN. We also have international legal offices located in the United Kingdom, India, Australia, Brazil, China and Mexico and Africa. Through these various offices, we are able to support our businesses throughout the world.

This is an exciting Corporate Counsel IP/Commercial opportunity based in Indianapolis, IN, with some travel to Columbus, IN, and offers diverse in-house responsibilities.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Responsible for handling a variety of complex legal matters or projects across a wide range of businesses, regions and/or functions.

  • Recognized as a developing expert in IP law, specialty, function or geographic region; negotiates legal matters within the individual’s realm of responsibility; acts as a resource to others

  • May be allocated responsibility to support in management of a relationship with a business unit, business segment, region, or function

  • Responsible for project and matter management with limited supervision; exercises independent judgment

  • Shares in management of outside counsel relationships

  • Acts as trusted advisor for mid to high level management; has strong grasp of business environment; effectively partners with clients to identify and design needed improvements; provides legal as well as practical advice within the appropriate business context; understands and manages client expectations

  • Assists in development of legal strategies for the business

  • May influence or contribute to overall objectives and goals of organization

  • Provides support and leadership in legal function projects

  • May supervise and/or mentor one or more junior lawyers, paralegals or administrative assistants

Experience

  • Juris doctor degree from an accredited law school

  • Professional license to practice law in one state

  • At least 5-7 years legal experience in IP with a law firm, U.S. government, in-house or a combination

  • B.S in engineering preferred but not required

  • Strong transactional background, with significant experience negotiating and drafting contracts (M&A experience not required, but preferred);

  • Patent prosecution and/or litigation experience is a plus; and general understanding of and ability to identify issues with respect to antitrust laws

Set The Aim - Develops implementation plans that have a clear line of sight to and positive impact on the strategy; ensures execution plans are aligned with vision/mission/values, strategic principles and goal trees.

Strategic Risk Assessment - Takes an analytical approach and uses tools to support the decision being made. Takes opportunities and evaluates situations to initiate action that produces the highest level of positive results while minimizing negative impact. Anticipates and mitigates issues that may arise. Engages appropriate level of input for potential solutions before taking action. Ensures decisions made are aligned with company goals.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

Degree in law

License to practice law in home jurisdiction

Compensation and Benefits

Base annual salary commensurate with experience plus annual variable compensation. Additional benefits vary between locations and include options such as our 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan, Cash Balance Pension Plan, Medical/Dental/Life Insurance, Health Savings Account, Domestic Partners Coverage and a full complement of personal and professional benefits.
