Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Strong And Inspiring

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the United States Supreme Court who passed away, had inspired many. She had made an impact in the field of law and would be well –remembered. She promoted equality of gender and had an indomitable spirit which made her a strong person.

Her demise had made people emotional as she had made notable contributions in law by promoting gender equality, made an impact on society. She was a wonderful litigator as well. She had even made dissents which had caught the admiration of people.

She had suffered personal losses and still, she did not accept defeat instead she went on to achieve her dream. Her determination and not to give up spirit had influenced many which was definitely inspiring too. She was admired for her enduring spirit and her strong personality by all.

Some of the important cases:

United States v. Virginia  

Females were excluded from being given admission in Virginia Military Institute which was exclusively for males then. This is one of the prominent cases where it was held that it is unconstitutional to disallow qualified women from being given admission just on the basis of gender.

The case where Lilly Ledbetter had sued Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.

Plaintiff was working in the company with the pay equal as that of the male employed there. But during her retirement, she received pay lesser than that of the male employee who received the lowest pay. On the basis of performance of each employee, there were increases and sometimes, the increase was not given. In the initial years an employee in the company  she got a chain of evaluation that was on the negative side. Even though, later, she received good evaluations, still, due to her prior negative evaluations, she did not get the same pay as the males employed there.  Charges were filed formally by the plaintiff and sued. Justice Ginsburg dissented orally in the case. Later, legislation for equal pay was enacted.

The dissent by Justice Ginsburg did not go in vain and instead led to the enacting of the legislation. She was an optimist, her fierce spirit and endurance captured the admiration of many individuals.
