Position Overview:

The position of Lead Counsel – Complex Litigation is responsible for managing and coordinating activities related to the defense of commercial litigation matters (both class and individual actions) and the pursuit of claims on behalf of General Motors LLC and its various affiliates (collectively, “GM”).  Examples of such litigation matters include consumer and other class actions, intellectual property litigation, actions arising out of the myriad of contractual arrangements to which GM is a party, dealer disputes and an exceptionally broad range of other sophisticated litigation and pre-litigation matters that are not related to product liability or employment disputes. 

The successful candidate will be an excellent manager who can work collaboratively, efficiently and effectively with a team, while also working on the company’s important litigation matters.

Primary responsibilities of the role include:

  • Coordinating with the Complex Litigation team and the Assistant General Counsel – Complex Litigation to manage workload, evaluate and handle cases, monitor budget and achieve group goals.
  • Assisting with the management of the Complex Litigation group’s work and development – helping each team member to succeed while addressing challenges.
  • Reporting as needed and required, including “up the ladder” communications.
  • Liaising with other inside counsel, outside counsel and the relevant business personnel to manage cases and matters in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Ensure that a budget exists for all complex litigation matters and that matters are managed to budget.  Review and approve invoices and expenditures consistent with the delegation of authority.
  • Work with GM’s eDiscovery team to implement best practice strategies for handling discovery in the most cost-effective manner possible.
  • Assist with the analysis of claims and pleadings and the development of the most beneficial strategy from both a legal and business perspective.
  • Ensure that GM and the Legal Staff’s policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Track legal trends and key developments in complex litigation.
  • Assist with process improvements and oversee and manage support staff resources.

Qualifications& Experience:

  • Law degree from atop-tier law school and license to practice law in Michigan, or the ability toobtain admission to the Michigan bar within one year of employment.
  • A minimum of 15 years oflegal experience handling complex litigation matters.  Experience must include acting as leadattorney handling all aspects of sophisticated class and individual actions.
  • In-house experience isnot required but would be beneficial.
  • Knowledge andunderstanding of the automotive industry not required but beneficial.
  • Demonstrated expertise ina variety of complex litigation matters, including substantial experience inall aspects of analysis, development of strategy, eDiscovery, motion practice,the use of experts and trial.
  • A proven track record ofexcellent managerial skills, including the ability to serve as a coach andfacilitator to the team.
  • Demonstrated ability toestablish and build rapport with the group and foster an environment thatencourages a mindset of positivity with a core focus on continuous improvement.
  • Ability to collaborate,build relationships, gain credibility and partner with others up and down amatrixed organization.
  • Strong organizationalskills to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously from inception tocompletion.
  • Strong negotiation skillsand possess the ability to manage through difficult situations with thirdparties.
  • Ability to providepractical legal guidance to address business priorities and obstacles.
  • Willingness to serve as a“guardian” of the Company by speaking up to say what needs to be said;providing complete, direct and actionable feedback to others; and addressingproblems quickly and directly.
  • Providing appropriatecommunication and information updates to management, enabling GM to makewell-informed decisions for the business.
  • Strong written and verbalcommunication skills and the ability to tailor the appropriate communication tothe relevant audience.
  • Ability to organize andprepare information for management via timely, clear and concise summaries,reports and presentations.
  • Should bedetail-oriented, analytical and technical yet flexible, self-motivated and ableto maintain a broad perspective.
