Department Information
The Mission of the Public Defender's Office is to provide complete, quality legal representation to indigent defendants who are faced with a possible jail sentence and are charged with a municipal ordinance violation in the Aurora Municipal Court. The Public Defender's Office is governed by the Public Defender Commission, which ensures that indigent clients are represented in accordance to its strict guidelines.
The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come, first-serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice. 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs routine secretarial duties related to the preparation and processing of legal documents for the Public Defender's Office.

  • Types a variety of legal documents including correspondence, memoranda, legal pleadings, briefs, forms, and reports
  • Develops and maintains legal case filings
  • Processes paperwork from incarcerated defendants, warrants, process servers, and court personnel
  • Files legal documents and correspondence
  • Answer general phone inquiries from out of office attorneys, the general public, and other agencies and officials
  • Prepares and processes dockets, setting slips, personal service, jail visits, and subpoenas
  • Assists with Discovery involving Body Cam
  • Requests Court files and City Attorney files for court docket additions
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years progressively responsible secretarial experience. 
  • One (1) year of legal clerical experience preparing legal documents such as discovery orders, motions, pleadings, citations, and subpoenas

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.


Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of general office procedures
  • Legal terminology
  • Legal forms
  • Personal computers including related word processing software applications

Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens
  • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Multi-task and prioritize work in a fast-paced, high volume environment
  • Able to problem solve

Skills:

  • Skill in typing at a minimum rate of 50 net words per minute
  • Skill in the use of personal computers including related word processing software
  • Skill in transcribing machine dictation
  • May require skill in taking oral dictation at a minimum rate of 80 words per minute.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands:

  • Primarily sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, walking and standing
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate office equipment
  • Vision sufficient to read computer screens, reports, and related department documents
  • Dexterity to operate computer keyboards and other related office equipment
  • Endurance sufficient to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment

Equipment Used:

  • Frequently uses standard office equipment including typewriters, computers, calculators and copy/fax machines
  • Frequently answers telephone
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment

Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
