Digital Transformation is revolutionizing the role of software development across industries. Although historically relegated to back-end systems that support business operations, software is increasingly becoming a source of differentiation within the actual products and services companies offer, from smarter vehicles to connected thermostats. That differentiation is powered by software developers who build applications and the cloud services that bring those applications to life.

Microsoft has a deep commitment to offer developers the tools they need to create those apps and cloud services. Its Developer Tools business is evolving its industry-leading Visual Studio family of technologies to excite developers and enable them to easily build any app for any platform and any business need. As a result, Developer Tools is not only one of Microsoft’s billion dollar-plus businesses, but is also a long time strategic imperative for the company and a key pillar for supporting all of Microsoft’s major products and services.

Microsoft’s Legal Affairs department is looking for a dynamic and motivated Attorney to provide legal support for the Visual Studio family. This attorney will obtain a broad perspective across the products and services offered by Microsoft as a whole, and will have unique insights and opportunities to contribute to the overall strategy of the Developer Tools business. Most importantly, this attorney will have the opportunity to help Microsoft win share in important new market segments.

  • Working directly with Developer Tools executives, engineers, program managers, and business development to analyze legal risks, devise creative solutions, and develop strong, trusted advisor relationships
  • Providing proactive counseling on intellectual property licensing, including open source software licensing, privacy, accessibility, and antitrust
  • Drafting and negotiating a wide range of custom and standard contracts and other legal documents;
  • Extensive and close collaboration with teammates, other legal professionals across Microsoft, and senior level clients on cross-company initiatives and transactions
  • Training clients on relevant legal issues, policies, and processes
