Section of Antitrust Law to host Global Private Litigation Conference June 17 in Berlin

WASHINGTON, June 5, 2019 — Private plaintiff and defense litigators, as well as government enforcers, economists, corporate counsel, academics and jurists from around the world will gather to share insights into the continuing path of multi-jurisdictional and collective antitrust redress at the American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law’s second Global Private Litigation Conference, June 17 in Berlin, Germany.

Program highlights include:

8:30-9:45 a.m.: “Panel I: From Amsterdam To Berlin – And Beyond” — This panel will provide a recap and level-setting for all participants of key issues raised at the inaugural Global Private Litigation Conference, and a forward-looking discussion of new developments.  Speakers are Konrad Ost, vice president at Bundeskartellamt, London; Johannes Holzwarth, policy officer, DG Comp Unit A4, European Commission; and Elsbeth De Vos, senior judge, Amsterdam District Court. The panel will be moderated by Brent Snyder, chief executive officer, Hong Kong Competition Commission.

11 a.m.-Noon: “Panel III: Populist Antitrust: Big Platforms, Big Solutions?” — Panelists will look at how Google, Amazon and other technological platforms are being analyzed by competition authorities in the European Union, United States and elsewhere, and whether existing laws can address the issues raised in a logical and coherent fashion. Speakers are Nicholas Banasevic, head of unit, DG Competition, European Commission, Brussels; Anne Federle, Bird & Bird, Brussels; Sandro Gleave, case officer, 6th Decision Division, Bundeskartellamt, Bonn; Jay L. 1-1:30 p.m. “Interview from the Bench” — The Hon. Sarah Vance, chair of the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, will sit down for an “Interview from the Bench,” an unmoderated, cross-border conversation.

1:30-2:30 p.m.: “Panel IV: Can I See That? Discovery Across Borders” — The panel will discuss new methods and arguments for obtaining discovery in global litigation, such as employing Section 1782 in the United States. Speakers are Anke Meier, Noerr, Munich; Kenneth R. O’Rourke, O’Melveny & Myers LLP, Washington, D.C.; Julia Schwalm, Morrison & Foerster LLP, Berlin; and Kalpana Srinivasan, Susman Godfrey LLP, Los Angeles, Calif.

4:45-5:45 p.m.: “Concluding Remarks Roundtable: A New World: The In-House Perspective” — Potential worldwide corporate litigants will offer their thoughts on global recovery and highlight a key point of interest that they’ve learned. Moderating the panel will be Gary P. Zanfagna, chief antitrust counsel and associate general counsel, Honeywell International Incorporated, Morris Plains, N.J.
