General Description

Manages the Grievance Referral Program, a diversion program for minor misconduct cases.   Coordinates efforts by the Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel to identify and address issues related to impairments and lawyer misconduct. 

Primary Functions

  • Manages diversion program for the resolution of minor misconduct cases referred by the Commission for Lawyer Discipline.
  • Assesses incoming GRP participants to identify conditions or issues for resolution through remediation, rehabilitation or further referral. Develops contracts for program participation; implements and supervises contracts for compliance; prepares and delivers reports of compliance to the Deputy Counsel, Chief Disciplinary Counsel and Commission for Lawyer Discipline.
  • Develops and coordinates resources for referral, remediation and rehabilitation activities.
  • As needed, develops policies and procedures for the program, maintains systems that provide for the confidentiality of participants, files and activities related to the program.
  • Assists respondents challenged by impairments in accessing appropriate resources.
  • Works closely with Attorney Compliance Program Administrator to monitor compliance with rehabilitative terms of license suspension, trust account reporting requirements, and monitoring of law practice or law practice management terms.
  • Develops and enlists participatory assistance of local grievance panel members and other volunteers in addressing law practice management and lawyer impairment issues.
  • Maintains collaborative working and referral relationships with the Texas Lawyers’ Assistance Program, Law Practice Management Program, and Texas Bar CLE.
  • Serves as an information resource and advisor on lawyer disability and impairment issues for Chief Disciplinary Counsel’s Office.
  • Makes presentations and develops informational material to increase the legal community and public awareness regarding the program.
  • Performs other responsibilities and duties as required.

Position Requirements

  • J.D. required. Dual licensing as a mental health professional highly preferred. 
  • Requires knowledge of and experience working with individuals in crisis due to multiple environmental stressors or challenged by substance use and mental health disorders. 
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the Texas Rules of Disciplinary Procedure and the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct preferred.
  • Experience developing and delivering presentations and training preferred. 
  • Position requires diplomacy and a high degree of professionalism. 
  • Must communicate effectively on the telephone, in person, and in writing.  Travel up to 15%.
